Bringing Veterinary Care to Pets in the Pikes Peak Region

Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region’s new Wellness Waggin’ is hitting the road this fall to lend a paw to pet owners in need. The custom-built mobile veterinary clinic is similar in size to a recreational vehicle, but take a peek inside and you’ll see it’s all business. Thanks to grant funding and the tremendous support of local donors, the Wellness Waggin’ is on an important mission.

While the main focus of HSPPR’s in-shelter veterinary clinics in Colorado Springs and Pueblo is providing care to shelter animals, the Wellness Waggin’ will allow the team to reach pet owners in need where they live. Many pet owners are unable to access basic veterinary care due to economic and geographic barriers. HSPPR recognizes the human-animal bond benefits individuals, families, and the community, and to preserve this special bond and its positive impact, the Wellness Waggin’ will be scheduling regular low-cost clinics around Colorado Springs and Pueblo. Affordable access to veterinary services keeps pets happy, healthy, and in their homes and out of the shelter.

“We believe pets and people are better together,” said Veterinary Services Director Julie Crosby. “We see day in and day out families that care deeply about their pets – and their pets are just as attached, too. These pet owners want to provide the best care possible, but rising veterinary care costs make it difficult to do so. That’s where the Wellness Waggin’ comes in.”

The Wellness Waggin’ expands HSPPR’s top-notch services in the community. You may not know HSPPR’s Colorado Springs campus is the only animal shelter in Colorado to be accredited by American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA). Accredited veterinary practices are evaluated on approximately 900 quality standards that go above and beyond basic state regulations, ranging from patient care and pain management to staff training and advanced diagnostic services. AAHA-accredited centers are recognized among the finest in the industry and are consistently at the forefront of advanced veterinary medicine.

Inside the Wellness Waggin’ is a surgical suite identical to what you’d find behind the walls of HSPPR’s brick and mortar locations in Colorado Springs and Pueblo. A prep table right next to the surgical table means a quick transition between a veterinary technician and the veterinarian. Anesthesia and oxygen machines are built in and kennels line the walls just outside the surgical suite to allow for the recovery of up to 30 pets at a time. Most importantly, surfaces are easily disinfected to prevent the spread of

disease. It’s not uncommon for HSPPR’s veterinary team to perform 40 to 50 spay/neuter surgeries every day. The Wellness Waggin’ team could add as many as 20 to 30 more. Along with vaccinations, blood tests, and even dental procedures, the Wellness Waggin’ will no doubt provide much-needed veterinary care for pets in our community that might otherwise be at risk for surrender. Pets and people – we truly are better together!
