Is there anything better than sharing a meal with others? Since 2015, Silver Key has been providing older adults age 60+ with the opportunity to meet new people and eat with friends at Silver Key Connections Café meal sites throughout the community. It’s a great way for seniors to remain independent, engaged, and active. Today there are twenty Connections Café sites offering hot, nutritious meals five days a week.
Healthy meals are freshly prepared and served daily by Silver Key staff and volunteers, under the direction of Silver Key’s executive chef and a nutritionist. All meals are low-sodium and are prepared to meet 1/3 of the recommended dietary allowance for seniors. As a recent diner said, “A most pleasant meal served by a happy, gregarious group of volunteers. Thank you for this service. The laughter of my fellow diners brightens my day and lifts my spirits.”
So how does it work? Anyone age 60 and over is eligible to have lunch at one of the Silver Key Connections Café sites throughout the community for a suggested donation of $2.25. The spouse of an eligible diner is also eligible. Donations are used to offset the cost of meals and expand the program to more seniors. If a friend or family member less than 60 years of age
would like to join an eligible diner for lunch, they are welcome to do so for a cost of $6 per meal. Reservations are required at most locations by 2 p.m. at least one day prior to dining and can be made online at www.silverkey.org/connections-cafe. or by calling 719-884-2304. You’ll also find a list of locations online.
Monthly menus featuring nutrition education are available at each meal site to make it easy to monitor dietary needs. Delicious and nutritious menu selections include favorites such as chicken teriyaki, riblettes, and meatloaf with gravy. Desserts are always popular, too.
Most importantly, the more than 1,000 area seniors served monthly through Silver Key Connections Café enjoy the friendship and fun that sharing a meal provides. As another recent diner stated, “Good nutritious food. Good variety, generous portions. Pleasant company, friendly people. Helpful volunteers. Thank you for a fine meal and conversation.”
If needed, Silver Key Reserve & Ride transportation service can provide rides to Connections Café meals. For seniors who are not able to get to a meal site, Silver Key offers Home Delivered Meals brought to your home by friendly volunteers. For more information and to register for these services, visit www.silverkey.org or call 1-884-2300. With Silver Key, aging in place has never been easier!
